HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT SHADE OF HAIR EXTENSIONS

ALWAYS MATCH TO THE ENDS

The first thing to consider is where exactly to match your extensions! Many people can be thrown off if they have dark roots or multiple tones throughout your hair. However, we ALWAYS advise matching your shade to the ends of your hair. Remember, hair extensions are an extension of your natural locks, and you want the end result to be seamless as possible. So, to ensure there are no harsh lines and your extensions blend undetectably, choose your shade based on the ends of your hair.

DETERMINING YOUR TONE

Taking a look at not only the shade of your hair but the TONE is so important! Some people find their perfect match, yet the tone can be way off. For example, our Jet Black #1 and Natural Black #1B are both black colours but with slightly different tones. So, be sure to consider the undertones of your natural hair when choosing your shade. Does your hair appear cooler-toned, or you prefer a more ashy shade? Or is your hair more warm with a more rich tone to your colour?

CONSIDERING THE QUALITY OF HAIR

One factor that is often overlooked when choosing the right shade of hair extensions is the quality of the hair. Low-quality hair extensions that are made of synthetic materials are often available in very unnatural shades which make it extremely difficult to look natural. Whereas high quality 100% human hair extensions like ZALA hair are available in natural hair colours, with multi-tonal technology. Choosing premium quality human hair extensions is also super important if you can’t quite find your exact colour. ZALA hair can be safely toned and dyed to match.

Barely-There Waves

After a no-fuss style that is super easy yet still looks chic? Barely-there waves are for you! Read on for everything you need to know how to get the look.

barely there waves

BARELY-THERE WAVES

Barely-there waves are that perfectly undone, supermodel look. Think Gigi Hadid & Kendall Jenner. Also known as flat waves, they’re super effortless and make the perfect everyday hairstyle. There’s no doubting why we absolutely LOVE the barely-there waves at ZALA, so let’s get into exactly how to get the look:

  1. Starting with second or third-day hair, give your locks a quick brush through to ensure there are no knots and tangles. This style works best with a little extra grip! So if you’ve got freshly washed hair be sure to have some extra texturising products on hand. Dry shampoo is perfect for adding texture and hold prior to styling.
  2. Next, apply hair extensions for a bit of added length and thickness. This can stop the look from appearing too messy by thickening up any wispy ends. For best results, we like to opt for a shorter, more everyday length such as our 16 or 20-inch sets at ZALA.
  3. It’s time to start curling! Taking a medium sized curling wand such as the ZALA Cosmo Wand 28mm barrel, take 1-inch sections and curl the middle of the hair only. The key to barely-there waves is to keep the root and the tip of the hair straight! This adds a subtle wave and creates a really textured, undone look.barely-there waves
  4. Once all the hair has been styled, give it a quick comb through with your fingers to break up the waves slightly.
  5. Finish with a light spritz of texturizing spray and you’re done! You’ll find this look will need little to no touching up throughout the day, as the more ‘worn in’ the better. Perfect for those lazy hair days.

What do you think of the barely-there waves look? Let us know below 🙂

How to Cut Hair Extensions to Blend

Are you having a little trouble blending your hair extensions? Or, do you prefer a more layered look? We show you how to cut hair extensions to blend!

how to cut hair extensions to blend

Although ZALA Hair Extensions come in their box ready to be applied, sometimes a little layering & trimming can achieve a more natural look. This also depends on your taste and hair cut! The following techniques are perfect to add some shape and layer your ZALA’s, particularly if you have short layers at the front of your hair.

HOW TO CUT HAIR EXTENSIONS TO BLEND

Before we get into each cutting technique, let’s address some important points before cutting your ZALA locks!

  • If you are unsure, please take your hair extensions to a salon to get them professionally cut & blended with your natural hair. It’s important to always seek advice from a hair dresser who has experiencing cutting hair extensions.
  • Work very carefully, cutting very small amounts at a time. Remember, we don’t cover any costs or take responsibility for unwanted cutting results, so you want to be sure you’re extra careful when cutting your extensions!
  • It’s best to cut your hair extensions dry and applied into the hair so you can see the exact result
  • Keep your head up and looking straight into a mirror so the hair lays in correct position
  • Always use scissors specifically designed for cutting hair
  • Don’t use any tensions or pull the extensions

cutting - slicing

Our first technique on how to cut hair extensions to blend is slicing! This technique is perfect for adding shape to the front sections of your hair for a more tapered look.

The first step when slicing is to locate the short layers of your natural hair. This will indicate where to start cutting! Holding the section of hair in between your fingers, take your scissors and with the blades open, gently slide & slice in a slow diagonal motion. It’s super important to keep the scissors open and to keep moving! Keep going until you reach your desired results, being careful to make sure you don’t trim your natural hair.

cutting - point cutting

The next technique when cutting & layering hair extensions is point cutting. This feathers the ends of the hair and aims to get rid of any blunt lines. To point cut, pick up the ends of your hair and cut straight into the hair. With the point cutting technique, it’s essential you’re cutting in straight lines so that you don’t cut any length.

Next up, slithering! Very similar to the slicing technique, this removes bulk to create more feathered locks. With slithering, take your scissors straight down in the middle of the section and use the same sliding technique with your scissors open. Where sliding is most ideal for the front layers of the hair, the slithering technique is perfect to create a more tapered look throughout the hair.

Lastly, blunt cutting! This is perfect to remove any wispy uneven ends once you’ve feathered & layered the hair to taste. To blunt cut, pull all your hair in front and comb through. Using your fingers as a guide, slide hands down the hair and stop at how much you want to trim. Cut straight across if you want a blunt cut or use the point cutting technique for a more feathered appearance.

And there you have it! The best techniques on how to cut hair extensions to blend! Please don’t hesitate to contact our friendly support team if you have any questions regarding blending your hair extensions. Email: [email protected]

Do’s and Don’ts of Clip In Hair Extensions

DO’S & DON’TS!

If you’re investing in a super luscious set of premium ZALA clip in hair extensions, it’s important to know exactly how to take care of your clip ins! Be sure you’re not guilty of committing these hair extension ‘sins’ with our do’s and don’ts of clip in hair extensions.

DO’S AND DON’TS OF CLIP IN HAIR EXTENSIONS

DON’T wear your hair extensions in bed whilst sleeping! We know most of you are guilty of either crashing in your extensions or just leaving them in a pile on the floor! This is a sure way to knot & tangle your beloved extensions.

do's and don'ts of clip in hair extensions

DO

store your extensions properly in our super easy & convenient Protect Me Bag! Hang those babies away and ensure they’re properly stored! Our Protect Me Bag helps to prolong the lifespan and give you the healthiest looking locks in their best condition!

DON’T

bleach or lighten your clip ins! At ZALA, our sets have already gone through a long dying process to achieve their gorgeous shades! Therefore we repeat, DO NOT attempt to bleach or lighten your extensions. The harsh chemicals in peroxides and bleaches can cause some serious damage to the hair.

DO

tone or darken if necessary! If you want to dye your set a custom colour or feel the shade is just a touch too warm? You can safely tone or dye your ZALA Hair. Be sure to always test your product/dye on one single piece first. This makes sure you know you will achieve the results you love!

do's and don'ts of clip in hair extensions

DON’T

brush roughly or when wet! Much like your natural hair, brushing your ZALA locks when the set is wet can cause serious damage. Hair follicles are open and more delicate when wet, so you’re sure to make your set prone to breakage or shed excessively.

DO

brush regularly and carefully when dry, tip to top! Always be sure to use your Loop Brush or ZALA Tangle Teaser to get rid of any pesky tangles. This will leave your extensions feeling silky smooth without the damage <3

DON’T

wash too often! Clip In Hair Extensions can not recreate the oils to nourish the hair like our natural hair does. This means, regular or excessive washing will be sure to dry your extensions out and shorten their lifespan.

DO

wash only when needed with sulfate free shampoo and conditioner. You’ll be able to tell when your clip in extensions needs to be washed. This is typically after product build up, or you notice a change in the appearance or feel! Not sure how to wash your clip ins? Watch our easy-peasy tutorial below:

DON’T

wear extensions to the gym or swimming! This is just asking for damage & tangles! If you’re a beach babe or gym junkie? Leave your extensions safely at home!

DO

wear extensions with care & take lots of selfies <3 Show us your shots wearing your ZALA locks with the hashtag #zalacliphairextensions so we can see how you style your ZALA Hair!
