7 Bad Hair Care Habits You Need To Get Rid Of

“Excellence is not an act, but a habit,” a wise philosopher named Aristotle once said. And indeed, habits do make a man. We reap what we sow, and though we may not know it, we’re always sowing every single day, every single moment of our lives.

In this article, we’ve included 7 bad hair care habits that you need to get rid of as soon as possible!

zala-bad-hair-care-habits

1. Washing your hair daily

You may think that keeping your hair ‘clean’ at all times is the best way to take care of your hair, but that couldn’t be farther from the truth.

In actuality, washing your hair on a daily basis does more damage than good. Washing, especially if you use cleaning agents like shampoo, for example, can greatly damage your strands if you do it often enough. Shampoo, and even just plain water, can strip away your hair’s natural oils, which are extremely important in keeping your hair hydrated. By washing every single day, you’re actually removing those necessary oils that could help protect and moisturize your hair.

2. Forgetting to use sunscreen

Speaking of protection, forgetting to use hair sunscreen is another one on our list of bad hair care habits that you need to get rid of.

Your hair needs to be protected from the harsh rays of the sun, that’s really all that needs to be said. Just like your skin, your hair is extremely vulnerable to harmful UVA and UVB rays. The longer you expose your hair to these rays, the higher the chance of your hair getting damaged.

Sun-damaged hair can be seen in the form of frizzy hair, dry and brittle strands, and discolored locks. If you want to avoid those, better start using sunscreen now!

3. Eating junk foods

“You are what you eat,” or so they say. If that’s the case, then if you’re always eating junk foods… well, we’ll let you come up with a conclusion yourself.

Nevertheless, what you eat is very important if you want to maintain healthy and gorgeous strands. Your hair is made up of a kind of keratin called protein, and it needs all the nourishment it needs. The best foods include protein sources like meat and eggs, as well as vitamin-rich foods like fish and vegetables.

4. Always getting stressed

Nobody likes getting stressed, that’s for sure. But if you want to look beautiful at all times, then that’s even more reason why you should avoid getting stressed.

Too much stress can raise your cortisol levels, which messes up your body’s hormones, causing it to wreak havoc in all sorts of ways. When it comes to our hair, stress can cause some pretty scary effects. For example, alopecia, a condition where a person loses hair in round patches, is often linked to stress. Yikes!

Remember, there’s nothing wrong with taking it easy sometimes. Life isn’t a race, after all.

5. Forgoing enough sleep

One bad habit that people don’t realize is damaging their hair is staying up too late. One moment they’re just checking something on their phone, the next thing they know, it’s 3 AM and they still have to show up to work at 8 AM tomorrow. Uh-oh, is less than 5 hours of sleep really enough?

Short answer: no. And we won’t even bother with a long answer because it’ll all just come down to “no”, anyway. Not getting enough sleep at night is a huge problem that everyone just tends to ignore. What they don’t know is that it can lead to a whole list of other issues that could’ve been avoided had they just slept enough.

For example, lack of sleep can cause stress. As mentioned in the previous item, too much stress can cause loss. It’s also during sleep that your body heals and repairs itself. If it’s not getting enough sleep, you won’t be rested when you wake up in the morning either. This fatigue will just build up more and more as it shows up in your physical appearance in the form of dark eyebags and dull, dead hair. It’s certainly one of the bad hair care habits that you should get rid of ASAP.

How To Have Shiny And Glossy Hair

Dull and dead hair has never been fashionable, not in a thousand years. Throughout time, women have aimed to have hair that could turn heads, the kind of hair that can command all the attention in a room.

After all, who doesn’t want to have a crowning glory that sparkles and glimmers in the light? Here’s our definitive guide on how to have shiny and glossy hair!

zala-shiny-and-glossy-hair

Keep hair smooth and soft

It goes without saying that smooth and glossy hair is hair that’s also smooth and soft. If your hair has tangles all over and is riddled with split ends and frizz, there’s a good chance that it won’t shine no matter how many times you turn under the light.

In order to keep your hair smooth and soft, it’s important to have an effective hair care routine. Remember that your routine depends highly on your hair type as well as the state of your hair’s health, so do make sure that your personal routine fits these criteria.

Choose a good shampoo

A good shampoo is one that will not weigh your strands down or cause excessive dryness. Sadly, not all shampoos on the market can tick off those two items.

If you’re looking for a good shampoo, we recommend that you get one that doesn’t have any parabens or sulfates. Both these ingredients can be really damaging to your hair, and for many reasons. With all the shampoo options seen on store shelves, it’s best to just avoid this kind of shampoo altogether.

Use hair oils

While conditioning your hair regularly is extremely vital in keeping your hair healthy and moisturized, sometimes it just isn’t enough.

Occasionally, you should also try using hair masks or hair oils to further moisturize your strands. Hair oils, in particular, are best at making sure that your strands are well-nourished, as they penetrate much deeper than just regular conditioner. Coconut oil and avocado oil are particularly good oils to use for your hair.

Spritz on some hair serum

Before finishing up with your regular hair care routine, you should try to spritz on some hair serum first.

If you’ve ever used serums for your face, you’ll know that these are basically just concentrated versions of your moisturizer. In fact, if you have dry and frizzy hair, which means your hair could be lacking moisture or just plain out dehydrated, then serums could be downright miraculous for you.

Just remember, serums come in all types and forms, so again, make sure that you choose one that’s suitable for your own hair type.

Protect hair from sun rays

Did you know that the sun could be extremely damaging for your hair? Even if you followed all the tips from this article, if you’re always out unprotected in the sun, you can be sure that your hair will stay in the exact state that it is now, if not get worse.

It’s very important not to forget your hair sunscreen whenever you’re planning to go out for an extended period of time. Yes, it’s not just your skin that needs sunscreen! Your hair could get dehydrated just from the heat of the sun alone, so make sure to always protect it. If you want to keep shiny and glossy hair, you better start taking care of it starting now.

How To Manage Frizzy Hair

Managing frizzy hair isn’t always easy, but it is doable! In this article, we’ll provide some tips on how you can manage frizzy hair.

zala manage frizzy hair

Brush your hair properly

Brushing your hair the wrong way, especially with the wrong brush, can not only worsen already frizzy hair but can also cause frizz on otherwise smooth hair.

How do you brush your hair properly to manage frizzy hair? First, pick a hairbrush suitable for your own strands. Next, make sure that your hair is completely dry before brushing. Wet hair is more vulnerable so it’s a lot more prone to getting damaged. Also, don’t forget to use gentle strokes only and not tug on your hair if it’s tangled.

Regularly condition your hair

If you’re suffering from frizzy hair, the best you can do is to help nourish and moisturize it. Frizzy hair is worsened by humid weather, which means that you shouldn’t let your hair go dry if you live in such a climate.

By regularly conditioning your hair, you’re letting all that much-needed moisture seep into your strands and nourish them from the inside. That’s the kind of nourishment you need when you have frizzy hair!

Moisturize your ends

If you’ve ever gotten tangles due to dry ends, you’ll know that they’re the hardest tangles to brush out. It’s pretty much impossible to detangle tangled dry hair without breaking at least a few strands.

Managing frizzy hair properly involves taking care of your dry ends. To do so, make sure to add some moisturizing oil to your ends to prevent getting them damaged.

Don’t use high-heat on your strands

Heat is never good on your strands, even more so if you have frizzy hair. In fact, if you really want to manage your frizzy hair properly, your best bet would be to avoid using heat at all. That means avoiding the use of tools like straightening irons, curling wands, and the like.

However, this is real life, and we know how much those tools are needed in your daily life, especially if you’re a working girl living the corporate life. If that’s the case, make sure to always use your tools only on the low-heat setting. This will at least mitigate the potential damages caused to your hair by the hot tools.

Tie your hair in a ponytail

Not all of us enjoy having our hair in a ponytail, but if you want to manage frizzy hair, you have to learn how to live with it, too.

Putting your hair in a ponytail helps avoid the frizz since you’re shielding it from the hot and humid air. It also helps avoid tangles, which means that you’ll be less likely to sustain damages caused by frizzy hair.

The Best Ways To Add Volume To Fine Hair

Having fine hair is honestly no big deal – until we see all those Instagram models and pageant contestants fabulously showing off their huge, wavy locks to the crowd’s delight, that is. Or, come on, let’s just face it: every time we see some random girl walking down the street with her entire crowning glory sexily swaying behind here. That’s something us fine-haired girls can never relate to.

If you’ve got fine hair, then don’t worry, we totally understand your pain! But you should also know that it’s not something that you should be forced to endure. And nope, we’re not talking about hair treatments that cost a fortune. We’re talking about simple things that every other girl can do, starting today.

zala-add-volume-fine-hair

In this article, we’ll discuss the best ways to add volume to fine hair, without having to break the bank!

1. Get a new haircut

A new haircut may seem counterproductive, but the thing is, a good haircut can be pretty life-changing, especially if you’re trying to make your hair look different. Believe it or not, there are some haircuts that can make your hair look flat and, on the other sid of things, some haircuts that can make your hair look instantly thicker.

One good example of hairstyles that can make your hair look thicker is the layered hairstyle.

(c) Unsplash

From its name alone, a layered hairstyle adds layers to your strands, thus making your overall hair look much thicker than it really is. If you don’t want to make it too obvious, you can also use more subtle layers towards the bottom part of your hair. It can even frame your face and accentuate your features more. Win-win, right?

2. Use volumizing shampoo

While you’re free to use all kinds of shampoos, there are some that can do the job better than others. This is especially true if there’s something specific that you want to achieve with your locks.

For example, if you want to add volume to fine hair, one of the best ways to do that slowly but surely is by using volumizing shampoo. True to its name, it adds volume to your hair just by fluffing your individual strands up, thus making your hair look so much thicker.

What exactly makes these shampoos so special? Unlike other shampoos, they don’t contain any heavy ingredients that can weigh your hair down, which means they clean your hair without leaving much residue.

3. Switch up your diet

Your hair is greatly affected by your diet, which means that if you’re not eating well, then your hair could also suffer.

Make sure to get plenty of protein, vitamin E, and biotin in your diet for the best results. These vitamins and nutrients are absolutely helpful in growing thicker hair as they promote healthy hair growth on your scalp. You can get them from common foods like eggs, fish, nuts, and many more.

(c) Unsplash

Of course, this doesn’t mean that you’ll magically have thick hair if you start eating these foods, but it certainly won’t help if you eat junk foods all day every day when you already have fine, thin hair.

4. Air-dry your hair

It’s no secret that many people blow-dry their hair every day – more likely for those who need to get to work in less than half an hour. After all, letting it dry all on its own just takes way too much time.

However, air-drying your hair could actually have some benefits, especially if you’re someone who has naturally fine hair.

For one, air-drying your hair makes it much smoother than if you had dried it using a hot tool. That’s because it doesn’t damage your strands, unlike your favorite heated blower. Just don’t let your hair stay wet for hours at a time, as that could be quite damaging too.

5. Wear hair extensions

Last but definitely not the least, if you really want to get instant volume, your best bet would be to wear hair extensions. Extensions can instantly change your hairstyle, making it much thicker and even changing the color if you want to.

How To Rejuvenate Bleached Hair

Anyone who has ever tried bleaching their tresses in the past will know the problems that plague bleached hair. Extreme dryness. Very prone to breakage. Multiple split-ends. The issues are so common and persistent that it almost feels like getting blonde hair for a few weeks isn’t really worth all the trouble.

Fret not – ZALA is here to the rescue! For today’s post, we’re sharing with you our guide on how to rejuvenate bleached hair, no matter how hopeless it may seem!

zala-rejuvenate-bleached-hair

1. Treat yourself to deep conditioning hair masks

When your hair is bleached, you’re dealing with a lot of extremely dry and frizzy hair. And the best way to combat dry hair? Tons and tons of moisture.

Make sure that your hair gets all the moisture it needs with deep conditioning hair masks made specifically for bleached hair. You can even make your own hair masks using natural ingredients if you want. Here are some of our favorites!

Argan Oil Hair Mask

  • 1 tbsp Argan Oil
  • 1 tbsp virgin Olive Oil
  • 3 tsp organic Honey

The Argan Oil and Olive Oil will work together to moisturize your hair while the honey will serve as an emollient. Emollients seal moisture into your hair and ensure that your hair will stay moisturized for a long time. Just apply this mask evenly through your strands and leave on for at least 20 minutes. Wash as normal afterward.

Egg Hair Mask

  • 2 tbsp egg yolk
  • 3 tbsp Aloe Vera
  • 1 tbsp Olive Oil

We’ve already established how Olive Oil can help moisturize your hair. Did you know that egg yolks have moisturizing properties as well? Eggs have protein and biotin, which can instantly lift our hair and provide it with much-needed nourishment. Leave this mask on for about 30 minutes and you’re good to go. The perfect way to rejuvenate bleached hair, indeed!

2. Use a conditioner as often as you can

Since your hair lacks moisture, it’s only natural that you’ll do your best to retain that moisture for as long as possible. Washing your hair with water strips off moisture from your hair so apart from your hair masks, you should also try to condition your hair as often as you can after shampooing.

Do take note that conditioning your hair too much without shampooing can lead to greasy hair. Remember, the only reason you’re conditioning your hair is that you want to keep its moisturized state even after cleaning your hair with shampoo. If you’re not going to shampoo your hair, it’s probably best to stay away from conditioners too.

3. Get a professional hair treatment

Getting a professional hair treatment at a trusted salon is certainly not cheap, but it’s definitely more expensive to deal with damaged hair if you let it become worse.

Salons know what’s best for your hair, and what’s best for your hair right now is usually a keratin treatment. Our hair strands are naturally made of keratin, so a keratin treatment aims to add keratin back to your locks to get it back to its gorgeous state.

4.  Give your hair a fresh start

Sometimes it’s much better to start over from the top than to repair what’s already broken. Why not get a spanking new haircut?

Not only will getting a haircut help to reduce damages caused by split-ends and weakened strands, but it will also help in giving you a fresh new look. Just because you’re battling the bad effects of bleaching doesn’t mean you have to look miserable while you’re at it, after all!
