Deep Conditioning Treatments Vs. Keratin Treatments

We’re lucky to live in a time and age where it’s not hard to find hair treatments for practically any sort of issue. Unfortunately, that does give us an unexpected dilemma: with all the various treatments out there, it’s no longer easy to determine the best of them all.

In the battle of deep conditioning treatments vs. keratin treatments, which one does your crowning glory really deserve?

Deep Conditioning Treatments

Our hair always looks its best when it’s moisturized. That’s why deep conditioning treatments are such a must for everyone, no matter the hair type or style.

If you’ve ever done anything to your hair, like tied it up, braided it, got a rebond or a hair perm, or used any kind of styling product whatsoever, then you probably also need to do a deep conditioning treatment every now and then.

The benefits of deep conditioning treatments are many and varied:

  • Moisturizes hair. The topmost benefit of deep conditioning your hair is that it moisturizes your strands. This improves your hair texture and generally just helps keep your hair healthy and nourished.
  • Prevents breakages. Like we’ve said time and time again, if you keep your hair moisturized, it’s also keeping them healthy and less broke to damages. By doing so, you’ll be sure to prevent potential breakages happening to your beloved strands.
  • Makes hair shinier. Not only can a good deep conditioning treatment help your hair from the inside, it also makes your hair’s appearance look and even feel much better.
  • Reduces frizz. Dry hair and humid environments together cause frizz. When your hair is dry and the air around it is not, your strands tend to get up and try to find moisture around it, therefore appearing frizzy. By keeping your hair well-moisturized, there’s no need for your strands to sought out moisture elsewhere.

Keratin Treatments

Keratin treatments are typically salon-done chemical processes that aim to repair dry and damaged hair.

Results can last anywhere from three months to six months, provided that you follow all your stylist’s  recommendations. If your hair’s condition isn’t that bad, a keratin treatment is usually a good temporary solution to frizzy hair, instead of the more extreme hair rebond treatment.

These days, you can find DIY keratin treatments that you can do at home too. But for the most part, it’s still better to just avail the service at a salon to make sure that everything goes smoothly. Also, home-done keratin treatments rarely last as long as one done in a salon. That’s still aside from the actual chemicals and solutions used. Actually, salons also tend to have better equipment needed to do the entire treatment.

Deep Conditioning Treatments vs Keratin Treatments

Not all deep conditioning treatments are keratin treatments, but all keratin treatments are deep conditioning treatments.

New York salon owner Arsen Gurgov says in comparison to a Brazilian blowout, “Generally speaking, you will get more of a smoothing and deep-conditioning effect with a keratin treatment as it contains less harsh chemicals and silicones, which weigh down the hair and clog the scalp.”

There isn’t much difference between these two kinds of treatments, as you can see. Although strictly speaking, keratin treatments are generally understood as the more professional treatment between the two. Meanwhile, ‘deep conditioning treatments’ is the general term for the treatment. This can mean anything from DIY moisturizing treatments to professional Brazilian blowouts.

Whatever it’s called though, it’s good to get at least one hair conditioning treatment for your hair per month, or even per week. Keeping your hair moisturized doesn’t just ensure that it always looks its best, but also so that it always feels best.

Ginger Hair: The Magic Behind Red Hair

There’s certainly something about red hair that’s beautiful and mysterious at the same time. Whether it’s the little mermaid swimming in her part of the sea or Isla Fisher dazzling us with her magical looks, red hair is certainly something to be envied.

In today’s article, we’ll talk about this amazing, magical hair color: ginger hair!

History of Ginger Hair

Despite modern movies depicting redheads as bully-victims and odd black sheep, the truth is, history has always been colorful for our ginger-haired friends.

Back in Ancient Egypt, red hair was regarded as a powerful color. In fact, even Ramses II, AKA Ramses the Great, was known to have been mummified with his hair still colored with a red pigment. The famous Queen Cleopatra was also said to be a redhead, and thus, many women of her time aspired to look like her.

Meanwhile, in Ancient Greek culture, red hair was seen as a symbol of courage and honor. Two of the most famous Greek heroes in literature, Achilles and Menelaus, were described to have red hair. Even Helen of Troy, often touted to be the most beautiful woman in the world, the woman who started wars between the gods and the human world, was said to have reddish hair.

To this day, many statues of women in Athens’ Acropolis Museum are also shown to have red hair, due to the Greeks’ adoration for the color.

However, life wasn’t always as rosy for redheads, even in ancient times. In Ancient Rome, actors who acted as slaves in theaters were often given red wigs to wear. Redheaded prostitutes also cost a lot more than ‘regular-haired’ prostitutes. Many Egyptians viewed ordinary redheads as unlucky and would sometimes even bury them alive, offering them to god Osiris to end the bad luck.

How It Happens

That said, one of the most common reasons why red hair was so prominent back then was apparently because it was one of the easiest to get artificial hair colors of that time.

In actuality, though, red hair is the rarest color you can get naturally. Only about 1%-2% of the world’s population is a redhead. In numerical values, this means that there are only about 75 million to 150 million gingers in a world of 7.5 billion people.

Many redheads originate from northwestern Europe, as the color is pretty much nonexistent in most other parts of the world. You would also be hard-pressed to find a natural redhead who isn’t fair-skinned. Why? Because one cause of red hair is a lack of sufficient pigment, the same thing that gives color to one’s skin. Sadly, this also means that redheads could be more prone to skin cancer. So if you have red hair, you should always make sure that you’re using sunscreen every day, both for your skin and hair.

Being a redhead also comes from a recessive gene, which means that a child could have ginger hair even if her parents do not.

Best Ginger Hair Hairstyles

Although ginger hair is insanely beautiful, many redheads suffer from drier than average, even frizzy hair. That’s because natural red strands are naturally thicker, coarser, and frizzier than other hair types. This makes styling and general hair care a bit more difficult for gingers. Then again, it only makes it more important for redheads to stick to a regular routine in order to maintain their gorgeous locks.

In our next post, we’ll talk about some of the best ginger hairstyles you’ve ever seen, so stay tuned!

Mythbusters: Are Eggs Good For Hair?

Eggs are popularly known as a good source for protein, but did you know that they’re also used in DIY hair treatments since way back? Many have attested to the effectivity of eggs in making their hair shinier, smoother, and healthier.

But is that really true, or is it all just a myth? In today’s ZALA Mythbusters, we’ll discuss the question: are eggs good for hair?

zala-mythbusters-eggs-good-for-hair

The history of eggs for hair

The practice of using eggs, specifically egg yolk, on hair strands has been around for centuries now.

It can be traced back to the 11th century when women first used eggs as natural nourishment for their strands. In the 1940’s, people also used egg-infused shampoos in the belief that it would make their hair much stronger and shinier.

Are eggs good for hair?

Eggs contain plenty of vitamins and minerals such as Vitamin A, D, and biotin, all of which are beneficial to your hair.

Here are some of the supposed benefits of using eggs for your hair strands:

  • Strengthens hair. Eggs are very rich in protein, which is basically the same stuff that your hair is made of.
  • Nourishes hair. As mentioned above, eggs have lots of vitamins and minerals that will help nourish your strands from the inside.
  • Makes strands smoother. Egg masks can make your hair instantly smoother since it has lecithin, an enzyme that helps moisturize your hair deeply.
  • Speeds up hair growth. Thanks to all the vitamins and minerals, eggs can also help promote faster hair growth.
  • Treats oily hair. Egg whites contain enzymes that can help thoroughly clean hair by removing any excess buildup, which effectively lessens the oiliness of greasy hair.

That said, do take everything you read with a grain of salt. The majority of these stories are mere anecdotes and there is little research to back up these claims. Nevertheless, using eggs on your strands should be pretty low-risk, except if you have an egg allergy, of course.

Nordic White: Whiter Than Platinum

Hair trends, like all other trends, tend to come and go, but there are a few that creates an impact hard enough to leave a lasting impression.

Such is the case for Nordic white. We first saw this unbelievable color making its rounds on the Gram earlier this year, and what can we say, there was certainly something magical about it!

Presenting to you Nordic white, a color whiter than platinum!

zala-nordic-white

Nordic White: Where Did It Come From

Nordic white is a trendy hair color that was inspired by, as its name implies, the icy terrains of Norway.

It looks very similar to platinum and yet it still seems like a much cooler and more solid color. Some describe it as a cross between light gray and light blonde, since it also tends to look silvery-white in certain lighting.

Nordic White In Pop Culture

White hair has been around since forever, but in our pop culture, there’s probably no one with white hair who’s more iconic than Daenerys Targaryen from the hit series Game of Thrones. Even those who have never watched a single episode of the series may recognize Daenerys simply because of her long, braided white hair.

How To Get Nordic White Hair

The only way to get this hair color is to bleach your hair. Depending on how dark your hair is, it could be a long, arduous process just to come close to the color. You’ll also need bottles of purple shampoo at all times to keep all the brassy tones away from your strands.

Should I Get This Hair Color?

While it is possible to get this color, it’s best that you think twice before you do so. The main question you should be asking first before anything is, should you even get it?

Quite obviously, this isn’t a hair color that you can easily achieve with your standard hair coloring procedures.

For one, the process to get it is quite risky for your hair as it required lots and lots of bleaching, which, as you may already know, is very damaging.

Platinum is already hard to achieve even with bleaching, and you’d have to step that process up a notch higher to get Nordic white. You may need to bleach your hair more than thrice or four times for hours at a time in order to get the perfect white color. For many people, especially those with thin hair, these sessions can be downright fatal for their strands.

Not to mention, even if you do manage to achieve it, maintaining is another hard feat. You’ll have to constantly bleach the roots over and over again to match the colors, and you’ll have to do some serious care to prevent your bleached hair from drying out completely.

Conclusion

So if you’re going to ask us whether you should get this hair color or not? It’s a fun hair color, yes, but you should probably see first if you can handle the process and the maintenance before you get it. Or, you know, if you wanted something close, you can always just use our ice queen platinum hair extensions here at ZALA!
