How To Find Your Perfect Hair Color

It’s easy to stay in our comfort zones, but hard to take a risk with something new. Uncharted territories have always been scary, especially if we have no idea what to expect once we finally get there.

How To Find Your Perfect Hair Color

In the case of experimenting with new fashion or hairstyles though, most people are scared of coloring their hair not because they don’t have any idea what to expect, but because they’re already expecting something else. Many times, the fear of everything not turning out ‘perfect’ is too hard to ignore.

In this article, we’ll help you get over your fear of experimenting with new styles! We’ve listed down some tips that will help you find your perfect hair color!

1. Try highlights first

Let your hair complement your eyes

If it’s your first time to color your hair, you might want to try highlights first before having your entire hair colored. We recommend this for two main reasons. One, if you’re a beginner at hair colors, especially those that need bleach, highlights won’t shock you as much. Two, they’re quite beginner-friendly, in case you want to DIY them.

2. Go by your skin tone

Your skin tone says a lot about what colors go with you, be it outfits or hair. Of course, there’s no problem if you just want to pick something for the sake of it, too! Here at ZALA, we value individuality and always try to encourage people to experiment with their personal styles. You do you, girl!

But again, if this is your first time experimenting with colors, a safe bet would be to try searching on the internet what people with similar skin tones as you have as their hair color. For example, red hair usually looks nice on people with ultra pale skin. Chocolate brown hair looks well on different people, but it looks especially nice on someone with olive skin. Find your comparison and decide if you’re going to base on that.

3. Think about how it complements your eyes

And not just your eyes, actually. You can also think about how it will complement the rest of your personal style. It’s just that, the eyes tend to be one of the first things that people notice about other people, especially if there’s something unique or striking about one’s orbs. “Eyes are the windows to the soul,” so they say. Let your hair complement your eyes so that it stands out from the rest!

4. Consider using temporary dye first

We’re no perfectionists here at ZALA, but let’s be honest – nobody enjoys admitting that they made a mistake. In the case of hair, it gets a little worse. You don’t even have to ask someone to know if their latest salon trip was a disaster or a blessing. You can see it right there.

That’s why, if you’re yet that confident about your skills yet, go knock yourself out with temporary dye! You’ll have fun and get to know yourself a little better too!

How To Perfect Your Prom Hair

It’s almost prom season!

And we think it goes without saying that for a young lady who’s just starting to transition into an adult, prom is one of the most important highlights of life. We’ve been there, you’ve been there. We’ve all panicked at the thought that our dress may not fit us after all. Our favorite foundation no longer matches our sunburnt skin. Our hair just simply cooperating.

It may seem silly to an adult, but to a teen, it can mean everything. That’s why, in honor of prom season, here’s a few tips on how to perfect your prom hair!

ZALA How To Perfect Your Prom Hair

A month before:

  • Get into the habit of using hair masks at least once a week. Preferably those with moisturizing properties, to help get your hair in its best shape, just in time for prom. You can even do them twice a week, for best results.
  • Deal with hair problems early on. Have frizzy hair? Dull hair? Flat hair? All these problems have to be dealt with at least a month before prom. Remember, there’s no such thing as an instant fix-me-up potion for unhealthy hair. You certainly wouldn’t want that for your prom hair, would you?

A week before:

  • Change up your hairstyle if you want. If you want to make drastic changes to your hair, like a new haircut, or perhaps even new hair color, this is the right time to do it. Why? Well, new haircuts are a great way to instantly look ‘fresh’ on prom night. Nothing like surprising your date and your friends with a new ‘do, right? As for hair colors, if you do it too early, your hair will still be able to grow which can lead to mismatched roots.
  • Start thinking about your actual hairstyle on prom night. This is also the right time for you to start visualizing what your hair is going to look like on the night of prom. Are you going to do a half-ponytail? What about volume waves? Silky straight? Regardless of what your hairstyle choice may be, make sure that you already have ideas a week before prom to prevent any last-minute disasters.

A day before:

  • Deep condition your hair. Deep conditioning your hair provide additional hydration to your hair, which helps immensely especially now that it’s so near to the event.
  • Get a good night’s sleep. We know you’re excited and all, but make sure that you get enough sleep the night before the prom! Lack of sleep can make your hair stressed out, and you certainly wouldn’t want that on your special night!

You know what they say, confidence is beauty. Always remember: you’re beautiful, no matter what your hair looks like! So just go out there, have fun, and enjoy your prom night!

3 Perfect Spring Hairstyles

We’re already in the second month of spring! If you’re still clueless as to what hairstyle you should be wearing this season, don’t fret – here’s a list of three perfect spring hairstyles that you should try out this season!

ZALA 3 Perfect Spring Hairstyles

1. Short cuts

Short hair cuts are totally in this spring, such as bob cuts, pixie cuts, or choppy layered cuts. Regardless of the actual style, short cuts are simply perfect spring hairstyles! This is especially true if you’ve always had long hair and would like to switch things up, for a change. After all, isn’t spring the perfect time to make new changes, at least after winter?

If you prefer a sleeker look, you can also opt for jawbone length hair done with pointed cuts. For a more polished, relaxed look, ask your stylist to do blunt cuts.

Hairstyle Tip: Want to get short hair but scared to make the change? Go shorter… gradually. If you’re coming from waist-length hair, for example, don’t just jump into a bob cut all of a sudden! Have your hair cut to mid-back first, then chest, then collarbone, etc., until you finally reach the length you want. Doing so will avoid you getting shocked by your new look and possibly regretting it, too.

2. High ponytails

Another hairstyle that we’re totally loving right now is high ponytails. High ponytails are classic hairstyles that never seem to go out of style for long.

How much are we loving them, you might ask? As much as Ariana Grande does, that’s how! She switched to a short hairstyle a couple of months back but began incorporating her signature ponytails again shortly after. What does that say about high ponytails, huh?

Hairstyle tip: The easiest way to make a high ponytail is to turn your head upside down and gather all your hair from that position. That way, you can get everything in your ponytail and make sure that it really is high up on the top of your head.

3. Bouncy hair

Healthy, bouncy hair is also one of our favorite hair looks. But who are we kidding – does bouncy hair ever go out of season? It seems like regardless of the time of the year, healthy hair that bounces when you walk is always fashionable and sexy.

Hairstyle tip: If you want to make your hair look bouncy, focus on the roots and the scalp. Too much sebum build-up on your scalp can cause your hair to become too oily and even matted, which definitely goes against your bouncy hair goals.

5 Tips For The Perfect Hairstyle Selfie

Snap! We live in a world where cameras are neither strange nor special. Nowadays, it’s normal to see your friends posting photos of themselves or their favorite things on a daily basis and uploading them on social media.

In a way, photos are an amazing way to keep up with your friends and family from far away. They’re also a great way to showcase the things or people you’re most fond of.

ZALA 5 Tips For The Perfect Hairstyle Selfie

Did you just get a new hairstyle and want to show off your hair to everyone in your friend list? Here are five tips to getting the perfect hairstyle selfie!

1. Prep your hair, always

If you really want to make sure that you’ve got the perfect hairstyle selfie, that means that you should prep your hair way before you want the picture to be taken. And since we’re always surrounded by cameras anyway, that means taking care of your hair on a regular basis. Sure, it may seem over-the-top, but come on, don’t you think it’s worth it for your very own crown of glory?

2. Apply volumizing products

Photos, (well, at least most) are two-dimensional, which can make your hair look pretty 2D too, depending on its condition and the way the photo is taken. If you think your hair looks too limp and dry, apply some volumizing products first before snapping up some shots! You can also brush your roots to give them more height, or curl your hair to give it that much-needed volume.

3. Use accessories to glam up

Not feeling glam enough? Accessories can instantly provide you the ‘glam’ that you need, provided that you don’t go overboard. You can also go for hairstyles that look like accessories all on their own, such as these lovely braided hairstyles.

4. Pick a good angle

Not all of us are photogenic, that’s for sure, but all of us have one angle that’s better than all the others. Your job now is to find that angle and remember it. Of course, you shouldn’t just limit yourself to one angle, but if you really want the perfect hairstyle selfie, you better start practicing in front of the mirror now!

5. Don’t give up

You may not get it right the first time, but that’s never an excuse to stop trying. Try a new hairstyle, try a new angle, try a new accessory – just don’t stop trying!  As long as you keep practicing, you’re bound to get that perfect shot one of these days!

Trimming Your Own Hair: Layers

Want an easy way to get volume in your hair without having to resort to expensive treatments and salon blowouts? We’ve got just the perfect thing for you: layered hair! Layers can easily give your hair the illusion of volume, plus it’s quite flattering regardless of your face shape, too.

Interested yet? Here’s a short guide to trimming layered hair, all on your own!

ZALA Trimming Your Own HairLayers

1. Planning is key

While the process to trimming layered hair is quite similar to basic trimming and trimming your own bangs, there are a few key points that make it slightly different. For example, if you’re interested in adding layers to your hair, you do have to plan in advance if you want it to turn out the way you want to.

Some of the questions that you need to ask yourself beforehand are:

  • How long is it going to be? Hair length is completely up to you, of course. But sometimes the perfect length can do wonders to your overall look. If you’ve got a square or round face, you’ll benefit more from longer layers. If you’ve got a heart-shaped or oval face though, you’ll likely look best with shorter layers that don’t look too different from each other.
  • Is your hair thin or thick? Layers can add an illusion volume to hair that is dull and limp. At the same time, those with thinner hair can also benefit from the added body that a layered look gives.
  • What style do I prefer? There are plenty of styles that you can choose from if you want layered hair, and it all depends on your personal preference. If you’re trying to emulate a certain model or actress, it may be best to study their hair for a bit first before attempting to trim your own hair.

2. Use the ponytail shortcut for trimming layered hair

While you can always divide your hair into sections and trim each one to achieve the look you want, there is a shortcut that you might want to try out if you’re a complete beginner in the subject.

Called the ‘ponytail shortcut’, this method involves tying your hair in a ponytail right at the top of your head. The best way to do this is to turn your head upside down and gather all your hair in a single ponytail.

Once that’s done, you can now adjust the elastic depending on how short or long you want the layers to be. If you want short layers, you should keep the elastic closer to your scalp. If you want longer layers though, move the elastic to the end of the ponytail. Cut the part of the hair after the elastic, and that’s it!

We told you, it’s really easy to give yourself a layered hairstyle, even in the comforts of your own home! For more hair tips and tricks, check out the ZALA blog!
