Trimming Your Own Hair: Bangs

The other day, we discussed the basics of trimming your own hair. Now, it’s time to focus on one specific part that we know plenty of people are curious to experiment on: trimming your own bangs!

ZALA Trimming Your Own HairBangs

Trimming your own bangs is not that different from trimming the rest of your hair, but trimming bangs can be a bit trickier for two main reasons. One, it usually requires more precision and accuracy than other parts of your hair. Two, if you mess up your bangs, it’s definitely going to be more obvious, as it’s right there in the middle of your face.

Here are a couple of tips to ensure that you trim your bangs correctly!

1. Use sharp scissors

Just like with the rest of your hair, it’s imperative that you use razor-sharp scissors when trimming your own bangs. Remember, your bangs are the most visible part of your hair, so you better make sure that you’re using extra special precision when trimming it!

2. Keep your hair damp

Again, this follows the basic rules of trimming. Always trim your hair when it’s damp. Not only is it easier to cut, it also minimizes the damages caused to your hair. One added bonus to trimming your own bangs when it’s wet is that makes it easier to cut your bangs straight.

3. Section off the bang area

If this is your first time to trim your own bangs, it would help you immensely if you can section off the entire bang area. To do this, you can first create a center part in the middle of your bang. You can then create a small triangular section of hair using the two diagonal partings at either side of the part.

4. Use a fine-toothed comb to lift your hair

Once this step is done, it’s time to start cutting! But first, get a fine-toothed comb and bring all of your hair forward, lifting off the strands from your forehead. You can then trim the hair this way, starting from the ends and cutting into the hair using tiny points. This method is called point-cutting and it’s especially useful when you’re cutting smaller areas of hair, like bangs.

5. Cut little by little

You might be tempted to just cut everything off in one single snip, but fight the urge to do that! Telling yourself to cut little by little helps you avoid more mistakes along the way, and it also reminds you to be more careful with every snip. Besides, we’ve all heard horror stories from those girls who cut their own bangs too short, so unless you want the same fate to fall unto you, better err on the side of caution!

See, trimming your own bangs doesn’t have to be so hard! If you do follow these tips, you’ll certainly be able to trim your bangs – and the rest of your hair – perfectly in no time at all!

Trimming Your Own Hair: The Basics

Trimming your hair is essential if you want to maintain strong and healthy hair that’s free from breakage and split ends. But while we all love a good ol’ DIY every now and then (be it DIY hair treatments, DIY hair colors, or DIY styling), there’s one DIY that we rarely ever want to do ourselves.

zala Trimming Your Own Hair - The Basics

If you said, “trimming your own hair,” then that’s 100% correct.

If you’re wondering how to get started on learning how to do your own hair trimming, then don’t fret! ZALA Hair is here to the rescue, and we’re here to provide a whole series of posts on how to trim your hair, the right way.

1. Always cut hair when damp, not dry

When trimming your own hair, you should always make sure to do it when your hair’s damp, not when it’s dry. Damp hair is easier to control and also prevent stray hair from sticking up or out of line, thanks to your hair’s elasticity. This means that hair sustains less damage when it’s cut wet than when it’s cut dry.

2. Detangle hair properly before trimming your own hair

Having tangled hair, when you’re trimming your own hair, is certainly a no-no. Tangled hair can cause problems while you’re cutting. Just imagine what would happen if you tried to cut through a particularly stubborn knot?

3. Make sure your scissors are razor-sharp

There’s nothing worse than blunt scissors when you’re trying to cut your hair. Blunt scissors won’t be able to cut your hair properly through the shaft, which could create ugly cuts. At the same time, blunt scissors can also prevent you from trimming straight across, which could be another problem if you just want a regular straight trim.

Not to mention, did you know that scissors that aren’t sharp enough can actually do you more harm than good? They can cause split ends and other breakages that we assure you, you wouldn’t want to risk.

4. Don’t panic at any point

It may be a bit scary at first, but remember to stay calm throughout the whole process. Remember, people tend to shake if they’re panicking, and shaky hands can definitely ruin the whole hair cutting process.

5. Practice makes perfect

Nobody in this world is perfect, and that’s especially true if it’s your first time at doing something. In the case of trimming your hair, it’s only natural that you won’t be able to do it perfectly the first time, or even the second or the third time. Odds are, you would need plenty of practice before you’ll be satisfied with your own work, but we promise you, it’ll be worth it someday.

Can You Brush Curly Hair?

Can you brush curly hair? This is a question that many people, curly and non-curly haired alike, have asked at least once in their lives.

After all, curly hair can be really hard and even downright unpleasant to manage. Due to its nature and chemistry, curly hair can make even simple things like untangling knots and tangles a hard challenge to overcome.

zala Can You Brush Curly Hair

Can you brush curly hair?

Short answer: no.

Long answer: yes, but only if you have the right ‘brush’.

To help expand on our answer, we’ll first give you the story of our good friend, Emilia.

The story of the curls

Now, Emilia has long, thick curly hair, the kind that has the tightest kinks that you can ever imagine. And in order to minimize the hassle of managing her own hair, she keeps her locks in two thick braids every single day.

On a day-to-day basis, Emilia surely does a good job of keeping her hair out of her business. But every time she removes her braids, usually when she’s showering or taking a bath, it becomes a huge, huge problem.

The main reason for her problem? Knots. In braids, her hair strands are well-behaved and properly managed. But once they’re out of their braids? They’re messy, they’re all tangled together, and they form… basically one big knot on her head. The stress her curly hair brings makes Emilia want nothing more than to pull it all out.

The right tools for the right job

Emilia soon found out that it’s perfectly possible to brush curly hair, even one as bold as hers, as long as she’s got the right tools for the job.

Here are a few things that helped Emilia in her quest to tame her wild curls:

1. Don’t use a brush

Wide-tooth comb

Emilia used to use a natural boar-bristle brush – you know, the kind of brush that people rave about all the time. What they didn’t tell her, however, is that these kind of brushes are only good for straight hair.

If you’ve got curly hair like Emilia, your best bet for detangling your hair would be wide-toothed combs. Firstly, they don’t get in the way of your tight curls. They also don’t ‘catch onto’ the rough parts of your hair, making them the perfect way to detangle curly tresses.

2. Always deep-condition before you brush curly hair

Emilia discovered that deep conditioning her hair before trying to brush it helps make the detangling process easier.

And it makes a lot of sense, doesn’t it? Deep conditioning your hair makes it softer, smoother, and sleeker, making it easier to comb through the strands. Not to mention, deep conditioning your hair can also lock in moisture in your strands, making it less dry, which curly hair is notorious for.

3. Brush curly hair while in the shower

There’s another trick Emilia learned that really helped in ,brushing her curly hair. Brushing your hair while in the shower helps make the process go much more smoothly!

Plus, brushing hair while it’s wet, in general, can help avoid damages that the friction from the comb can cause. This includes frizzy and flyaway hair, which not only curly-haired people experience.

We hope you learned something from Emilia’s experiences with curly hair! If you’d like more tips and tricks regarding hair care (especially curly hair care), feel free to check out our ZALA blog!

How To Get Tight Curls ft. Aidette Cancino

Waves and curls are amazing enough as they are. But if you’re interested in creating a more striking hairstyle that will certainly make you stand out from the crowd, then dramatic tight curls are perfect for you.

Here’s a quick tutorial from one of our ZALA influencers, Aidette Cancino!

zala tight curls aidette cancino

How To Get Tight Curls

Surprisingly, it’s actually not that hard to create dramatic tight curls that can command the attention of the room the moment you walk inside. All you need is a curling wand and some hairspray, as well as a lot of patience, and you’re done!

Disclaimer: In this tutorial, Aidette used a13mm curling wand to curl her hair, but it’s perfectly possible to use ZALA’s own 4-in-1 Cosmo Curling Wand as well. If you’re going to use the ZALA Curling Wand, use the 18mm barrel to create similar results. The curls won’t be as tight, but they’ll look just as gorgeous – guaranteed!

What you need:

Step-by-step guide

  1. Start off by spraying a heat protectant hair product on your hair. This is to lessen any damages caused by the heat tool that you’ll be using. In Aidette’s video, she used a hairspray specifically used for “maximum-strength hold that lasts for up to 24 hours.” It helps shield hair from any environmental issues that may cause it to lose its curls too early.zala-instagram-tight-curls-aidette-cancino-1
  2. Once you’re done with that, start curling your hair from the top part down to the bottom. Aidette started out by curling all the hair framing her face.
  3. When you’re done curling that area, you can then proceed to the next. Tie the top part of your hair first while you curl the rest of your hair on the bottom part.
  4. With the top part of your hair out of the way, it’s time to spritz some more hairspray! Just like the first time, this is to ensure that your curls will really stay on your hair for as long as you need them to.zala-instagram-tight-curls-aidette-cancino-2
  5. Start curling your hair again, picking up where you left off. If you missed any spots, or if your hair failed to curl at certain areas, now’s the time to go back and curl them again.
  6. When you’re done, don’t forget to scrunch up your hair gently to make them look scrunchy and more voluminous.zala-instagram-tight-curls-aidette-cancino-3
  7. Don’t forget to add some finishing touches to complete the look!
