Your Quick Guide To Wearing Floral Hairstyles

Floral hairstyles are some of the prettiest hairstyles on this planet!

Not only do they look absolutely gorgeous, they’re also really romantic and divine! You can wear them to spice up a casual outfit or to glam up an already elegant attire. You can wear them to the movies, to parties, to family events, and even to weddings. You can also wear them on hangouts with friends or even to romantic dates with your significant other.

zala Your Quick Guide To Wearing Floral Hairstyles

Before you start doing floral hairstyles though, here’s a quick guide on how you can pull them off properly.

1. Pick out the best flowers to match your hair

There are all sorts of flowers and colors to choose from, so choose wisely! If you prefer using fresh flowers rather than synthetic ones, it’s best to use “something with a sturdy stem and strong petals that won’t wilt and look sad, like orchids or gardenias”, according to hairstylist Italo Gregorio in his interview with Allure. Definitely avoid heavy ones like tulips and roses. Yes, yes, we usually see roses in movies and cartoons placed behind ears, but in reality, they’re quite heavy and are more prone to breaking or falling.

You can also choose flowers based on their meanings. For example, violets mean modesty and faithfulness, while camellias mean gratitude. Jasmines symbolize sensuality and hibiscuses embody delicate beauty and sensitivity. Meanwhile, gardenias mean secret love, so if you’re planning to ask your crush out this coming Valentine’s Day, you know what to wear on your hair!

2. Avoid wearing other attention-grabbing patterns

Floral hairstyles are already a fashion statement all on their own, so you should avoid wearing other attention-grabbing patterns when you’re wearing flowers on your hair. Patterns to avoid include glittery designs, sequins, plaid, checkered, and other heavy patterns that can take the attention away from your hair. Flaunt your floral hairstyle, girl!

The best outfit to wear when you’re donning a beautiful floral hairstyle? The simplest one you can think of. Think plain white dress, maybe a pastel shirt and shorts, or perhaps a pair of casual jeans. There’s a reason why floral styles look so good at traditionally ‘white-colored’ events like weddings, you know.

3. Curl your hair for the best floral hairstyles

While you’re free to wear floral hairstyles regardless of your hair type, these kinds of hairstyles or hair accessories do look best on non-straight hair, just because they look better on hair that has volume–something traditionally straight hair normally doesn’t have. Your hair doesn’t even have to be super wavy or curly; it just has to be non-straight to make the best use of this hairstyle.

If you’ve got straight hair, no worries! You can always use the ZALA 4-in-1 cosmo curling wand to achieve the best curly or wavy look for your hair.

Layered Pixie

A short pixie cut always gives us a funky, modern hipster vibe. It can be a little hard to pull off and does require you to have a certain facial structure, but the general guidelines are pretty easy to remember. If you’ve got a round face, try to add more laters to elongate your face a bit. Square-faced? Make sure to keep your layers soft to avoid emphasizing your strong jaw. And if you’ve got an oval face, well, all we can say is that you’re in luck, darling.

Choppy Bob

The Secret To Making Curls Last Longer

Since we’ve been on the topic of waves and curls recently, let’s do a quick survey. Who wants a head full of gorgeous, playful-looking curls?

I sure do! I love curling my hair every now and then (using my ZALA 4-in-1 Cosmo Curling Wand) for a change of style. However, if you’re like me, then you’ve probably encountered this kind of impossible-not-to-notice problem in the past: curls that never stay curly!

zala making curls last longer

In the same boat as I am? Here’s a couple of secrets to making curls last longer!

Do necessary preparations before curling

Think of your hair like a school project–you can’t rush it or you’ll get bad or downright disastrous results! Before you curl your hair, make sure that you do some necessary preparations.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that your hair is light and airy before attempting to curl it. I’ve tried curling my hair before without shampooing it and the curls don’t even last for a few minutes maximum. The simple explanation is that all the extra oil and unseen dirt on my hair prevented the curling wand from doing its job.

Make sure not to use too much conditioner and to rinse thoroughly as that can weigh down your hair too! As long as your hair strands are light and airy, you’ll have a better chance of making your curls last longer for the rest of the day.

Adjust the way your curl your hair

Many times, whether or not your curled hair stays curly has a lot to do with how you actually curl your hair in the first place.

If you’re the kind of person who opts for higher heat thinking that it curls better when you’re styling your hair, STOP. Not only are you risking your own hair, but you’re also not helping at all! Curling your hair using lower heat, for perhaps a bit more time, actually works better.

Don’t believe me? Try twirling a lock of your hair around a pencil before you go to sleep at night and see how it is when you wake up in the morning. I’m telling you, the curls that result from those 8 hours of heatless curling will last much longer than high-heat curling anytime.

The heat only helps to curl your hair faster but hair can still curl even without heat.

Use a setting spray for your hair

Another not-so-secret secret to making curls last longer is using a setting spray.

Not all people use setting sprays (I actually don’t, at least not always) but they help tremendously if you want to keep your curls for longer.

You can actually start using hairspray while curling your hair, and then one more time after curling to keep the curls in place. This ensures that your curls will stay longer than if you just leave them alone after the styling process.

Final reminders for making curls last longer

  • Exercise caution when curling your hair! Heat is one of your hair’s greatest enemies so make sure that your hair is well protected before you attempt to use curling devices. Use a protectant cream or spray to minimize any possible damages to your hair.
  • Make sure your hair is in optimum curling condition! If your hair is damp, you certainly won’t see the results you’re looking for. At the same time, if your hair is too dry, you’re running the risk of accidentally burning off your hair if you attempt to curl.
  • Use high-quality curling tools! Using cheap, low-quality tools is certainly risky, especially when you’re dealing with something as fragile and delicate as your own hair. Invest in high-quality tools to make sure that your hair is getting cared for in the way it deserves.

How To Curl Hair With A Straightening Iron

We’ve been talking a lot about curls recently and beach waves are going to be totally in this 2019, so if you don’t know how to curl your own hair, you’re definitely missing out on a lot!

Interested in adding some playful curls to your hair? Your best bet would be through the use of a curling wand, like the ZALA Cosmo Curling Wand for example.

However, if you’re lacking the proper tools, you’ll be glad to know that there are some alternatives. Here’s how to curl hair with a straightening iron!

zala curl hair with a straightening iron

1. Use a heat protector

As we’ve often said time and time again, heat is one of your hair’s greatest enemies. Although it’s not particularly dangerous, too much heat can damage your hair, especially if you’ve got dry hair. Remember, every time you use a heat tool to style your hair, you’re always at the risk of accidentally scorching or further drying your hair out, so always exercise caution. For maximum protection, you can use the ZALA Revive Me hair treatment. Not only does it have heat-protecting properties, it also helps repair dry ends and restore moisture to your hair.

2. Start from the middle

The best way to curl hair with a straightening iron is to start from the middle part, around eye level. Divide your hair into sections and start curling each section from the middle. You should then wrap the strands around the iron, carefully pulling the hair away from your face before unwrapping it. If you want a more natural look, it would be best to keep the sections differently sized. At the same time, alternating between pulling away and pushing towards your face will also help make your curls look more natural.

3. Don’t let the iron stay for too long

Straightening irons, like most other heat-styling tools, are usually only meant to stay for a few seconds. Try to keep the iron moving at all times to avoid accidentally burning your own hair. If your strands are thin and light, lower the heat; if thicker and darker, bump up the heat just a bit. Remember to leave the ends straight to create a more pleasing result!

4. Spritz some hairspray to retain the curls for longer

After curling, you should run your fingers through the curls for a more laidback, relaxed look. Once you’re done, spritz some hairspray on for maximum longevity! Now you can add whatever accessories you want to finish up, or perhaps do some curly or wavy hairstyles. Enjoy your newly curled hair!

The Perfect New Hairstyles For 2019

Just like that, 2018 has come and gone, and now it’s time for a brand new start!

As Disney’s iconic Frozen character Anna sings, “say goodbye to the pain of the past, we don’t have to feel it anymore,” you can also say ‘bye bye’ now to all your hair woes of 2018. A brand new year means a brand new chance to turn over a new leaf, and that’s applicable to all things–hair included.

On that note, here’s our list of the perfect new hairstyles for 2019, as suggested by stylists worldwide!

High Ponytail

Ariana Grande

Oooh, looks like ponytails are going in style this 2019! Call me lazy, but this is personally my ultimate go-to look when I’m too tired, too lazy, or too anything to style my hair. It’s so easy to just gather all your hair together and tie it up in one high ponytail, especially when you don’t have a lot of time to spare. The higher it is, the better, says Justine Marjan, a celebrity hairstylist at TRESemme.

Beach Waves

When did beach waves ever go out of style? The answer is pretty much a solid “NEVER”, but we’re still glad to see this hairstyle on the list, nonetheless. If we’re talking strictly 2019 hairstyles though, then you should be aiming for less pronounced waves for a more laidback and carefree look. For the perfect beach waves, you can check out our holiday waves guide!

80’s Blow Dry

Not a fan of daily styling? You’re probably a fan of the 80’s blow dry, which features a messy, ‘just-got-out-of-bed’ look that seems lazy and yet strangely sexy. Unlike Brooke Shield’s famous blow dry though, the 2019 version will be a bit smoother and sleeker-looking. “I think we will see the blow-dry come back into fashion,” says Daniel Galvin style director Cheryl Munoz, “whether it be through wavy, curly, or straight hair styles.”

Layered Hair

Jennifer Aniston

Layered hair feels so early 2000’s, but those who loved this look will be happy to know that it’s going to make a comeback this 2019. Layers are good for both short hair and long hair, as they can actually “create movement without losing the full length”, according to Linda de Zeeuw, master stylist at Rob Petoom Hair Salon.

Wavy Updo

Taylor Swift

Wavy updos have always looked romantic, classic, and elegant–there’s no denying that. They’re not particularly trendy but they’ve always been around, usually seen during proms, debuts, or other formal events. This 2019 though, wavy updos will be finally making their way to the spotlight. Hint: the more accessories, the better, according to ghd Ambassador Zoe Irwin!
