Can You Tone Hair Extensions?

Maybe you’ve already outgrown your chosen color, or maybe you’re feeling like your blond extensions are already looking brassy. Regardless of your reasons, there are some instances when you just want to freshen up your extensions.

But before you throw out your hair extensions, check to see first if you can still fix it. In this case, you might want to try toning your hair extensions.

Can you tone hair extensions?

Simply put, yes, you can tone hair extensions.

Just like your own, natural hair, extensions are also colored using hair dye. That means that even extensions can get that brassy look that all dyed blonde hair gets after a while.

Some hair extension colors also tend to look warm by default, so if you want to make them a little bit cooler, your best bet would be to just tone them closer to the right closer.

Is it a safe procedure?

Hair toners are generally safe and non-damaging to hair extensions, but as with everything, it’s best to apply some precaution before doing this procedure.

For one, not all hair toners are created the same. Some are more gentle or harsher than others. Even hair extensions don’t have the same quality. There are hair extensions that will immediately show signs of damage if you attempt to chemically treat it for whatever reason, while there are some that can take whatever you throw at it and still come out beautiful.

When it comes down to it, all it means is that you should always do more research before buying something, especially if that something involves your crowning glory.

The dangers of toning hair extensions

If you do it the wrong way, or if your hair toner or your hair extensions themselves aren’t of good quality, there are some dangers that you do have to watch out for.

  • Overtoning. Overtoning your hair can lead to blue or purple, which you may not necessarily want.
  • Discoloration. Hair extensions are a lot more porous than your own natural strands, thus they tend to absorb color more. Toning too much or too often can cause some discoloration in your hair extensions, and unlike your natural hair, this is sometimes harder to wash off.
  • Tangling. Your hair extensions are extremely prone to tangling while you’re toning them. To combat this problem, always do only one section at a time, to help your hair stay smooth, soft, and best of all, tangle-free.
  • Shedding. Hair extensions that have been toned way too much can experience shedding as well, apart from many other hair problems. You wouldn’t want this, of course, so always remember to just tone when you really need to.

Toning your hair extension is certainly possible, but you should always do your due diligence and exercise caution before you do this procedure!

How To Take Care Of Your Hair Extensions

Anyone who’s ever worn hair extensions at least once in their lifetime will know that extensions are totally helpful and even life-changing at times.

Not only can they give fullness to your hair, but it can also provide extra volume to dry and limp strands. If you have a bad haircut, or perhaps you’re growing out newly cut hair, hair extensions can certainly help you in this very trying times.

However, it’s also a fact of life that hair extensions, whether synthetic or natural, can be quite difficult to maintain properly. Of course, if you want to make the most out of your extensions, and if you want to use them for as long as you can, you have to ensure that you’re taking care of them the right way.

And how do you care for extensions the right way? Here are our top tips on how to take care of your hair extensions properly!

zala take care of hair extensions

1. Regularly wash your hair extensions

Your extensions may not be your real hair, but they’re still technically hair and thus require the same kind of hair you’d give to the ones that grow out of your scalp.

Simply put, just like natural hair, hair extensions also need to be washed regularly, or at the very least, once a month. Doing so will help keep your extensions shiny and looking like new at all times.

To wash your extensions, carefully take them out of your hair and submerge them in lukewarm water. While you can use most regular shampoo for cleaning your extensions, there are also various wig and hair extension shampoos that were specifically manufactured to cleanse hair extensions thoroughly without damaging them.

2. Use a wide-toothed comb to sort through tangles

Even hair extensions can get tangled sometimes, and in those cases, you should know better than to forcefully comb through it.

Here’s what you should do when you’ve got tangled strands. First, get a wide-toothed comb to help detangle your hair. Start from the ends, slowly moving your way to the top as your hair gets untangled. Once you’re done detangling it, you can now use other kinds of combs for styling.

3. Avoid using heat on your extensions

It’s honestly hard to count on both hands how many times we’ve said it before, but we’ll say it again: your hair’s biggest enemy is heat. It doesn’t matter if it’s hot tools, hot water, or hot water – the hotter it is, the bigger risk you’re getting your hair in.

The same goes for hair extensions, especially for human hair extensions like the ones we have here in ZALA. These extensions react terribly to heat, so you should always be careful when wearing your extensions around curling wands or straightening irons. This doesn’t mean you should avoid them completely, just that you should exercise some caution. For example, you can always use safe tools like our own Cosmo Curling Wand and apply heat protectants before starting the styling process.

When going outside in hot weather, you should also use hair sunscreen, created specifically to not only moisturize your hair but also provide extra protection against the harsh rays of the sun.

And of course, if you’re planning on taking a trip to the hot springs… you can probably make do without your favorite extensions, right?

4. Remove your extensions before going to bed

Another thing that people always forget is removing their hair extensions before going to bed. Hey, that rhymes – kinda!

The reason for this is two-fold. One, using hair extensions, especially if they’re clipped-in, can actually hurt you while you’re sleeping since your scalp is going to be in direct contact with the clips. Secondly, sleeping with your hair extensions on can damage them due to all the friction.

What’s The Difference Between A Wig And Hair Extensions?

If you’ve ever watched a hair care advertisement, then you’ll know it’s not weird to sometimes have thoughts of jealousy, all the while, wishing that you had dazzling lengthy, dense locks like the ridiculously happy model.

Unfortunately, such long beautiful hair doesn’t come overnight. Growing hair requires pretty much foreeeever, so many of us could never grow hair like that no matter how much we wished it.

In this manner, many have depended on the powers of hair wigs and extensions to accomplish their desired remarks. But really, what are the differences between these two? In this article, we’ll discuss the difference between a wig and hair extensions so that you’ll know which one is perfect for you!

wig vs hair extensions

Wigs

Wigs are head covers that are normally produced using human or animal hair. However, numerous wigs are now produced using synthetic fibers. Wigs have been around since ancient times and are designed to sit on a bald head or existing hair.

Wigs present both pros and cons. A few wigs are low quality, made of synthetic fibers that are unnatural looking. Others are made of human hair.

Pros:

  • Various styles and colors available in the range of wigs that instantly change your entire look with less effort.
  • Using a wig will save you for doing hair experimenting with color chemicals and heat styling tools that cause hair damage immediately.
  • You don’t need to trim your hair short or hang tight for them to grow. If you have short hair and would prefer not to change that or experience difficulty with hair growth, you can without much of a stretch get yourself a wig of the ideal length of hair and vice versa.

Cons:

  • Frequent use of the wig may result in the natural hair being suffocated or damaged.
  • Compared to your natural hair, it takes more time to wear. That’s because you need to wear the wig first and then style it.
  • Wigs can be hot and unpleasant in the summer season.
  • The base of the synthetic hair wig may cause some irritation to sensitive skin.

Hair extensions

We’re always told that thick, luscious hair is a sign of beauty from the moment we were pretty little, so losing our hair can make us feel ugly. That’s the reason numerous ladies search out hair replacement treatments and “ultra-realistic” human hair wigs, however, those treatments and costly wigs don’t come cheap.

Fortunately, there are more accessible options that can return your missing volume!

One of them is hair extensions. They can instantly turn your natural hair into complete, lengthy, wonderful “mermaid” locks! It just takes a couple of minutes to clip them in, but the difference is incredible!

Pros:

  • Improves your look and provides the perfect length and volume to your hair.
  • Without fear of harming your natural hair, you can color them with your desired color.
  • Normally blends with your own hair texture and quality.
  • No one can ever realize that you are wearing hair extensions.

Cons:

  • It can cost you extra money to install hair extensions, maintenance costs, trim, etc.
  • Required extra care.
  • It may feel heavy on your head for just 1-3 days with high volume, and then it goes away.
  • After a few months, hair may begin shedding, but it’s only minor and that’s totally natural.

Conclusion

Throughout history, our hair has been seen as our “crowning glory.” It’s a symbol of status, a standard of beauty and a fashion accessory.

Wig and hair extensions have turned into a common beauty accessory that millions of men and women use to improve the way in which their hair looks. It is a direct method that allows people to choose what kind of hair they wear and it can be an outstanding way to enhance thinning or short hair.

Whether it’s your hair wigs or hair extensions, don’t forget to wear a smile to enhance your beauty even more!

Should You Bleach Hair Extensions?

Tired of your ‘boring’ hair and decided to get hair extensions to spice things up? While it worked wonders for you the first week or so, now you’re tired of them again and want to get another color. But you still have a perfectly good set of hair extensions, and wouldn’t it be a waste if you just throw these away? Oh, that’s right. You can always just dye or bleach it yourself, right?

Indeed, should you bleach hair extensions? Here are three reasons why you should and three reasons why you shouldn’t!

ZALA Should You Bleach Hair Extensions

Yes, bleach hair extensions!

We’re first going to discuss why you should bleach hair extensions, especially in the situation given above.

1. You can save money on buying new extensions

The first reason why you should just bleach hair extensions lies is because of money matters. Let’s face it: hair extensions can be pretty expensive, especially if you’re really picky about yours and prefer high-quality stuff (as you should). Bleaching hair extensions that you no longer want can help you get more value out of your extensions, instead of just throwing it away in the trash.

2. High quality hair extensions can withstand bleach

In addition to the first point, there actually nothing wrong with using bleach on high-quality hair extensions. Take note of the keyword – high-quality. Sure, your $20 hair extensions may become burned if you attempt to do this. But we’re willing to vouch that the real, high-quality, 100% Remy human hair extensions, like the ones we have here at ZALA, won’t bat a single eye at bleach.

3. Some people do this regularly

Did you know that some people actually regularly change their hair extensions’ color? Some people just like using extensions for extra length and would like the color to match their own strands, hence the coloring materials, like bleach.

No, don’t bleach hair extensions!

Given those points, bleaching hair extensions, in this case, does sound like the best course of action. However, there are also quite a few reasons why you should probably consider just getting new hair extensions.

1. Bleaching is tricky for beginners

Considering that you’re reading an article right now whether or not you should bleach hair extensions, it’s pretty safe to assume that this must be your first time doing this. While we do like encouraging people, especially beginners, to be more creative and adventurous with their hair, bleaching is on a whole ‘nother level. It’s tricky to do successfully for beginners, that much is certain.

2. Too much bleach can damage extensions

(c) Unsplash

Regardless of how high the quality of your extensions are, too much bleach can still damage them to the point of no repair. Remember, bleach is an extremely strong chemical that has the ability to change the actual chemistry of hair. Add that to the trickiness of pulling off a successful bleaching job for beginners, and well, it’s starting to seem more and more like you shouldn’t bleach hair extensions after all.

3. The lifespan of your extensions could be reduced

Let’s say that you did manage to bleach your hair extensions successfully. Congratulations! That was definitely amazing. Unfortunately, the lifespan of your hair extensions has almost certainly been reduced, even if it’s made of 100% Remy human hair. Why? To put it simply, bleach can greatly dry our hair. In the case of real hair, at least you’ve got oils on your scalp to bring moisture to your strands. But hair extensions don’t have the same oils to protect them from the sudden dryness, which can severely affect longevity.

Made up your mind yet? Regardless of your final choice, always remember to be careful and to do your due diligence in researching before doing these hair treatments!

How To Straighten Hair Naturally

Although straight hair may seem a bit too ‘plain’ for some, the truth is, it will never go out of style.

After all, it’s probably the most versatile hair out there. It’s extremely easy to pair with any of your outfits. It’s also easy to care for and maintain compared to other hair types. Still, even those born with naturally straight hair can be faced with problems such as frizz and even ‘flyaway’ hair. Sometimes, there’s even the occasional wave if you tied your hair too tight last night. Infuriating, right?

If you know exactly what we’re talking about and are interested in how to straighten hair naturally, then you’ve come to the right article!

ZALA How To Straighten Hair Naturally

(Disclaimer: the tips written in this article may only work for those with straight hair or slightly wavy hair. Those with naturally curly hair may need a more permanent method of hair straightening to retain their straight hair.)

1. Conditioners are your best friend

We already talked about how you shouldn’t wash your hair every day. But if you do wash your hair, make sure to condition it every single time. After all, conditioners can help keep your hair hydrated at all times. Hair that is deprived of moisture tends to be dry and brittle, which makes it more prone to breakages.

Also, if you want to straighten hair naturally, conditioners can help you by making hair softer, smoother, and a lot more manageable! Of course, conditioners also tame frizz, which could prevent your hair from looking straight.

2. Brush, brush, brush

Straight hair needs to be brushed often if you want to keep it nice and smooth all the time. In fact, some even believe that brushing your hair a hundred times each day can help your hair grow beautiful and straight.

While this isn’t entirely true, as brushing your hair with the wrong brush or comb can do more harm than good, brushing does have its benefits. Just make sure you pick the right type of brush!

3. Silk wraps

Where do you think the term ‘silky straight’ hair came from?

One way that you can straighten hair naturally is by wrapping it in silk overnight. Silk wraps can help tame frizzy hair, which, as we mentioned above, can make your hair look not-so-straight. It would be better if you can get silk beddings too, if possible. Or if not, just get some good ol’ silk pillowcases!

4. DIY straightening masks

You probably already know by now that we’re a huge fan of DIY treatments. Interested in trying out some treatments right from the comfort of your own home? You can begin with an egg + olive oil hair mask, which can instantly soften your hair right after the first treatment.

Enjoyed our tips? Try to incorporate these in your daily and weekly habits and you’ll certainly say bye-bye to wild and frizzy hair soon!
