Why You Need Hair Extensions

For decades now, beauty has always been a need, not just a want. And for those who want long, flowing hair, sometimes hair extensions is the only answer.

Here are a few reasons why you may need hair extensions (not that we think you need reasons anyway!)

zala why you need hair extensions1. You want to get long hair, like, right now

Hair extensions can give a huge boost to your hair length in a flash. Especially if you’re going to use extra long hair extensions like the 30-inch extensions we have here at ZALA!

Need some extra length for a romantic date? No problem! Need to have your hair up in a high ponytail for a performance? Easy! Hair extensions provide you the length you need without any additional hassle, so what are you waiting for?

2. You crave for thicker, more voluminous hair

Feeling jealous of those lusciously thick locks often seen in magazines and billboards? Fret not, you can have them too – using hair extensions!

Hair extensions can be used to add some volume to otherwise limp and dull hair. If you’re craving for thicker, more voluminous hair, then you definitely need hair extensions ASAP.

3. You want a new hairstyle instantly

Sometimes you just want to jump into a new hairstyle right here, right now – but the thoughts of possibly not matching your desired hairstyle could be stopping you from fulfilling your heart’s desire.

With hair extensions, you can now experiment freely with whatever hairstyle that you may want. Granted, it may be a bit harder to go from a long hairstyle to a shorter one, but with the right tools and methods, it can be done!

4. You want to change your hair color

And speaking of experimentation, have you ever wanted to wear a new hair color for a change? Maybe you’re scared that it won’t turn out nice. Or maybe you’re scared that it won’t match your eyes, your skin tone, or you know, just you.

If that’s the case, then it’s time to invest in some high-quality hair extensions! With hair extensions, you can feel free to experiment with any hair color, no strings attached. You can choose from a wide variety of hair colors if you want, or you can pick out any light color and dye it to the color that you want.

5. You want to make your hair your biggest accessory

There’s a reason why our hair is always called our ‘crowning glory’. It’s our biggest natural accessory, making it absolutely vital that we always make it presentable. And hair extensions can help with that goal.

Your hair is whatever you want it to be, so if you want gorgeous hair, then it’s up to you to make it gorgeous! It’s a lot like life, really. Wanna lead an amazing life? Go live it! Need hair extensions to make hair more wonderful? So be it!

6. You’re trying to hide hair damage

Hiding damaged hair isn’t easy, but it is a lot easier if you have something to hide it with.

You can use hair extensions to cover the part of your hair that is dry and brittle while you work in the background to fix it. There’s no need to have to put up with damaged hair, you know.

7. You’re growing your hair out

Maybe you cut your hair too short, or maybe you’re growing it to a much longer length that it was before. Either way, hair extensions can help you while your hair is still growing to the length that you want it.

Hair Colours: All About Ombre

Since we’re already talking about highlights, it’s probably best to talk about one of the most popular highlight looks we’ve ever seen: ombre.

Ombre was all the rage a couple of summers ago, until it kind of died down a little bit as new hair colors and hair trends took over.

This year though, ombre is making a wicked comeback just in time for summer, and we’re all for it. Here’s everything you want to know about ombre!

zala Hair Colours- All About Ombre

What does ‘ombre’ mean?

The word ‘ombre’ comes from the French word ombrer, which is a verb that means ‘to shade’.

If we’re talking about the arts though, ombré is a color scheme which moves gradually from light to dark. It was originally used as a technique to dye fabric in the late 1800s and early 1900s.

Similarly, ombré as a hair color as well as a hair technique has something to do with dying hair with a color that goes from light to dark, from the tips up to the roots. If you look at it in reverse, it’s hair that is gradually lightened as you go down the strands.

How did the ombre hair trend start?

There are many stories as to how this hair trend started, but one of the most common stories has something to do with the princess of pop herself, Britney Spears.

According to the stories, in 2000, Britney, for a time, started wearing her hair like how we see the regular ombre hair today – dark at the roots before lightening at the tips. Then, in the years after that, more and more artists started showing up with ombre hair.

Is ombre safe for my hair?

Ombre is safe to do on all types of hair, but you do have to be careful if you’ve had multiple treatments in the past, as ombre requires some bleaching to achieve the look you want.

As you know, bleaching is one of the hardest and harshest treatments that you can ever put your hair through. For some, bleaching can even kill their hair. This is especially true if their hair is already dry and unhealthy, to begin with.

Can you DIY ombre?

Ombre hair is typically done in salons by experienced colorists, as the process can be quite difficult for beginners to do.

Not to mention, given the harsh chemicals involved in bleaching, you can accidentally ‘kill’ your own hair if it’s your first time and you still don’t know what you’re doing.

To avoid any unnecessary hair mishaps, it’s best to leave everything up to a trusted professional colorist.

Can I have ombre straight hair?

Ombre hair is most commonly seen on long, wavy locks. You know, the kind that looks perfect for the beach or for pageants. But don’t fret – you can also don this gorgeous coloring style even if you have straight hair.

In fact, if you have straight hair, you can actually use ombre to give it a longer, sleeker look. After all, the gradual lightening from the hair roots to the tips gives a lengthening effect to your hair. If that’s the look you’re going for, then ombre is definitely perfect for you!

How To Color Your Hair Extensions

Interested in coloring your hair extensions?

It may seem like such an unnecessary step for some, but sometimes, you just can’t avoid it. Maybe you chose the wrong color and don’t want to buy a new one. Maybe you just want to temporarily spice things up. Or maybe you’ve been using your hair extensions for a while now and just want to get a newer, fresher look.

Whatever your reasons may be, it’s perfectly fine to want to color your hair extensions. The only thing is, you have to know how to color your hair extensions the right way.

zala How To Colour Your Hair Extensions

How to color your hair extensions

One of the ways that you can easily color your hair extensions is through dying.

The practice of using a hair dye to add some color to your hair extensions is definitely not unheard of. Some people who use hair extensions in the long term even do it right after buying a new set, just to perfectly match their own hair.

Not to mention, dying hair extensions is also extremely easy, given the right tools and guidance.

Things to remember before coloring hair extensions

Before we begin, here are a few things that you should first remember before coloring your hair extensions.

  1. Test your hair extensions first. This is to check if your hair extensions can indeed withstand what you want to do to it. It’s like doing a ‘patch test’ with your skincare products.
  2. Always use the proper tools. When we say you have to use gloves while dying your hair, we really mean ‘use gloves’. Hair dyes contain very strong chemicals that could damage your skin.
  3. Not all hair extensions can handle hair dye. This is why it’s important to do a ‘patch test’ before soaking your whole set in the dye. You wouldn’t want to ruin your hair extensions beyond repair, would you?

With that out of the way, here’s our easy, step-by-step guide to coloring!

Step-by-step guide in dying your hair extensions

What you need:

  • Hair dye
  • Plastic comb
  • Plastic or latex gloves

Steps

  1. First of all, make sure you have all the necessary items within reach so that you don’t have to get up halfway through the process.
  2. For the hair dye, you can easily purchase one at any drugstore or beauty store around you. A beauty store hair dye is preferred, but even a drugstore brand will do if you’re not too picky about the hair color, or if you’re not trying to match your own hair color. Beauty store hair dyes just tend to have a much better range of natural hair colors which will make it easier to match your hair.
  3. Comb through your hair extensions, making sure that there are no tangles or knots whatsoever. If you’ve previously used your hair extensions, make sure to wash them thoroughly as well, as any styling product left on there can get in the way of your hair dye.
  4. Put on your gloves and prepare the hair dye mixture, making sure to mix the dye and developer well. Most boxes come with everything you need, even the disposable gloves and comb, but you should’ve prepared those materials too in case the box only has the dye and the developer in it.
  5. Time to apply the dye! Use the comb to dye your entire hair extensions, combing through the strands for a better effect. Remember, if you’re not sure if you’ve already dyed the area enough, just dye it again one more time. Make sure you add the dye to all the strands!
  6. After 25-30 minutes (or depending on what your specific hair dye says on the box), rinse out the dye with warm water. You can also use a conditioner at this stage to make your hair softer, as the dye can be quite harsh on your hair. Once you’re done, rinse it out with cold water to lock in the moisture and keep your newly-colored hair soft and silky.

Is it safe to color your hair extensions?

The process of coloring your hair extensions is perfectly safe, but not all hair extensions can handle all hair treatments, especially something as chemically harsh as hair dyes.

You should only worry if you’re using synthetic hair extensions, as the bond in those may not be strong enough to hold on when submitted to harsh treatments. But if you’re using 100% human Remy hair like the ones we have here at ZALA, you have absolutely nothing to worry about.

Can I Do Hair Treatments With Hair Extensions

So you love hair extensions and you also love your regular salon sessions. Great!

Er… or maybe not so great. You just got your new hair extensions, but you’d like to get a perm really bad. Do you or do you not get a perm? Oh no, what will you do?

zala hair treatments with hair extensions

Can I do hair treatments with hair extensions?

The concern is valid, but there’s no need to worry at all. Hair extensions, especially the high-quality kind ( like our very own human Remy hair extensions here at ZALA), are not meant to be treated like fragile glass pieces that will break at the slightest stress.

In short, the answer is yes, you can certainly do hair treatments with hair extensions.

However, as with anything, there are some limits as to the type and frequency of treatments that you can do.

Compatible and incompatible hair treatments with hair extensions

Whenever you want to do something to your hair, ask yourself the following questions first: do I absolutely need this? What are the risks? Do the benefits outweigh the risks? Doing so can help you decide whether or not you should push through with what you want to do.

  • Perming. You can perm your hair extensions if you’d like… but would you really want to get permanent curls? You can always curl your hair extensions if necessary, after all. Just remember to use safe curling wands or straighteners (don’t worry, no judgments here) and not to overdo it.
  • Rebonding. Technically, you can do this too, but it’s not recommended. For one, hair rebonding can be a very costly procedure. Hair extensions, on average, can only last up to two months maximum, so it’s probably best if you leave the rebonding to your real hair. Two, hair extensions usually come already prebonded, which means they’re already straight and soft when they make it to your hands.
  • Hair masks. Did you know that your hair extensions can actually benefit a lot from hair masks? Even though they’re probably already soft when you first buy them, eventually, there’s a chance that they’ll look dry too, especially if you use them on a daily basis. Make sure to use effective hair masks, be it DIY or not!

Heat is your hair extensions’ (as well as your own hair’s) worst enemy, so as long as you try to keep using heat at a minimum, your hair should be safe and sound.

How to make hair extensions last

You can make your hair extensions last longer by taking care of them well. And taking care of them well means taking care of them the way you would do your real hair.

  • shampooing and conditioning every couple of days
  • using paraben and sulfate-free hair products
  • using hair serums that are meant to protect or revive your extensions
  • using hair mask treatments meant to soften your hair
  • don’t sleep with wet hair extensions
  • brush often, but always gently

Blending Clip-in Hair Extensions ft. Brittni Geeves

Hair extensions look absolutely wonderful – especially when they’re blended correctly with your hair.

Extensions that aren’t blended well look super off and just simply out of place. Nobody wants that of course, so it’s important to learn how to do it yourself before showing off your new voluminous locks to the world.

Interested in blending clip-in hair extensions with your hair naturally? Here’s a quick and easy-to-follow tutorial from one of our ZALA influencers, Brittni Geeves!

How To Blend Clip In Hair Extensions

Blending clip-in hair extensions doesn’t have to be a struggle. With this tutorial, you’ll be able to blend your clip-ins like a pro!

What you need:

Step-by-step Tutorial

  1. If you’re planning to curl your hair extensions, Brittni suggests that you curl the extensions first before adding them to your hair. Start off by curling the extensions the night before you need to use them – this allows the hair to hold the curls better, thus making it look more natural once you finally add the extensions to your head.
  2. When you’re ready to clip the hair extensions in, start by sectioning off your hair from behind your ears and using a hair clamp to hold the section up.
  3. You can spray the roots with some hairspray before back-combing the lower section. You should do it this way instead of the regular front-comb if you want to attach the hair extensions upside down. Attaching the extensions upside down allows you to hide the short, stubby parts of your hair underneath.
  4. When you’re done clipping in the first set, bring your hair to the front.
  5. Go ahead and take half of the section that you clamped on top of your head. Attach the next set of extensions to this new half. You can also attach two sets here, one on top of the other, just like Brittni did.
  6. Once again, take half of the clamped section and clip the next set there. Make sure to back-comb this area before attaching!
  7. Now, take 1/4 of the remaining clamped section to attach the last four sets at either side of your head. Remember to leave that section thick enough to cover the extensions!
  8. Once all the sets are in, brush them all together to make sure that everything is blended seamlessly.

And that’s it! You can now style your longer, more voluminous hair in any way you want it.

You know what they say: practice makes perfect! Nobody on this Earth was born knowing how to do this naturally, so just try to practice whenever you can and you’ll be a pro at this in no time at all!
