Do Tape-In Hair Extensions Damage Hair?

Like many other hair procedures and accessories, hair extensions cause your hair some damage to a certain degree.

That said, it doesn’t mean that you have to haphazardly risk your hair every time you want to use hair extensions. Hair extensions have a range of benefits, of course – you just have to know how to minimize the risks.

Still, you may want to know: do hair extensions, specifically tape-in hair extensions, actually damage hair? Let’s find out.

How tape-in hair extensions work

Tape-in hair extensions work by adding hair strands to your own hair through the use of glue or some sort of adhesive. They’re pretty effective at adding volume to your hair instantly, especially if you opt for a full head of extensions.

The glue usually weakens or even comes off on its own after a few weeks or so, but you’re free to remove and replace tape-in hair extensions any time you wish, though it’s not recommended. Many people would

Do tape-in hair extensions damage hair?

To say it simply, yes, it can. That doesn’t mean they will, but the risk is definitely there.

Tape-in hair extensions are easy to use and they’re usually hassle-free to put in your hair, but unfortunately, they only last as long as your natural hair growth. The moment the tapes become noticeable, you’ll have no choice but to move them up, and that means ripping them off (gently, we hope) your hair and replacing them to a higher position.

It takes just a fortnight or so for the average person to get enough hair growth that they’ll need to move the tape-ins up, but even this infrequent moving up can be quite stressful and even traumatic for your strands. That’s why it’s important to never, ever remove your tape-ins unless you absolutely have to, and even then, you have to do it really carefully to avoid damaging your hair.

What damages can tape-ins cause?

  • thinning hair, possible eventual hair loss
  • weakened hair that’s prone to breaking
  • dry, frizzy hair due to stress

When should I use tape-ins?

If you really want to minimize the damages caused by tape-in hair extensions though, there’s one important question that you need to ask yourself: do I really need tape-in hair extensions? Or will my hair be better off with clip-ins / halo hair extensions?

There’s not strict guide on choosing hair extensions, but you do have to keep in mind the following:

When to use tape-in hair extensions

  • You need thicker, longer hair for more than a month
  • You only need a few sets here and there

When not to use tape-in hair extensions

  • You need a volume boost for just a few days
  • You need to cover your whole head with extensions

How long do they usually last?

Tape-in hair extensions, when cared for correctly, can last anywhere from six to ten weeks, but it does depend greatly on a lot of other factors, such as the quality of your extensions, your natural hair growth, your daily haircare regimen, and so on. For a more comprehensive answer on how long they usually last, check out this article.

Tape-in hair extensions are safe to use, but you do need some caution when using them. Remember, if you only need a temporary volume boost, you can always check out other kinds of hair extensions such as clip-in hair extensions or perhaps ZALA Halo hair extensions. These two are more expensive than tape-ins but they do a gentler job at giving you the volume you need ASAP.

The Secret To Making Curls Last Longer

Since we’ve been on the topic of waves and curls recently, let’s do a quick survey. Who wants a head full of gorgeous, playful-looking curls?

I sure do! I love curling my hair every now and then (using my ZALA 4-in-1 Cosmo Curling Wand) for a change of style. However, if you’re like me, then you’ve probably encountered this kind of impossible-not-to-notice problem in the past: curls that never stay curly!

zala making curls last longer

In the same boat as I am? Here’s a couple of secrets to making curls last longer!

Do necessary preparations before curling

Think of your hair like a school project–you can’t rush it or you’ll get bad or downright disastrous results! Before you curl your hair, make sure that you do some necessary preparations.

The first thing you can do is to make sure that your hair is light and airy before attempting to curl it. I’ve tried curling my hair before without shampooing it and the curls don’t even last for a few minutes maximum. The simple explanation is that all the extra oil and unseen dirt on my hair prevented the curling wand from doing its job.

Make sure not to use too much conditioner and to rinse thoroughly as that can weigh down your hair too! As long as your hair strands are light and airy, you’ll have a better chance of making your curls last longer for the rest of the day.

Adjust the way your curl your hair

Many times, whether or not your curled hair stays curly has a lot to do with how you actually curl your hair in the first place.

If you’re the kind of person who opts for higher heat thinking that it curls better when you’re styling your hair, STOP. Not only are you risking your own hair, but you’re also not helping at all! Curling your hair using lower heat, for perhaps a bit more time, actually works better.

Don’t believe me? Try twirling a lock of your hair around a pencil before you go to sleep at night and see how it is when you wake up in the morning. I’m telling you, the curls that result from those 8 hours of heatless curling will last much longer than high-heat curling anytime.

The heat only helps to curl your hair faster but hair can still curl even without heat.

Use a setting spray for your hair

Another not-so-secret secret to making curls last longer is using a setting spray.

Not all people use setting sprays (I actually don’t, at least not always) but they help tremendously if you want to keep your curls for longer.

You can actually start using hairspray while curling your hair, and then one more time after curling to keep the curls in place. This ensures that your curls will stay longer than if you just leave them alone after the styling process.

Final reminders for making curls last longer

  • Exercise caution when curling your hair! Heat is one of your hair’s greatest enemies so make sure that your hair is well protected before you attempt to use curling devices. Use a protectant cream or spray to minimize any possible damages to your hair.
  • Make sure your hair is in optimum curling condition! If your hair is damp, you certainly won’t see the results you’re looking for. At the same time, if your hair is too dry, you’re running the risk of accidentally burning off your hair if you attempt to curl.
  • Use high-quality curling tools! Using cheap, low-quality tools is certainly risky, especially when you’re dealing with something as fragile and delicate as your own hair. Invest in high-quality tools to make sure that your hair is getting cared for in the way it deserves.

ZALA Halo Hair Extensions Explained: What’s The Difference?

ZALA Halo hair extensions have been taking the hair extension world by storm. You might be asking, what’s so special about them?

But see, ZALA Halo hair extensions are special for a reason. And in this article, you’re going to find out exactly why.

zala halo hair extensions explained

What Are ZALA Halo Hair Extensions?

ZALA Halo hair extensions are hair extensions that are attached to a sort of headband, which you can then wear around your head. You can then hide the band by placing some of your own hair over it, therefore making it blend seamlessly with your own hair. It’s very easy to use and has virtually no potential risks either.

Benefits of ZALA Halo Hair Extensions

As mentioned above, this type of hair extensions pose virtually no risks to the user. In addition, it also has the following benefits:

  • Washable
  • Very easy to wear
  • Doesn’t budge even if you’re moving
  • Blends really well with your natural hair
  • Can be brushed while in the hair
  • Doesn’t use heat or glue
  • Doesn’t damage hair

ZALA Halo vs. Clip-in vs. Tape-in

zala halo hair extensions band

ZALA Halo hair extensions are still pretty new especially when compared to other types of hair extensions like clip-ins and tape-ins, but they’re quickly gaining traction among hair extensions enthusiasts.

vs. Clip-ins

Clip-in hair extensions are completely safe to use, but it can’t be denied that not all types of hair can handle clip-ins. People with thinner and weaker strands may have a slightly harder time putting in clip-in hair extensions. This problem is nonexistent in ZALA Halo hair extensions.

vs. Tape-ins

Just like clip-ins, tape-ins are also relatively safe, but the risk of damaging your hair is still there. Tape-ins make use of a form of adhesive, usually glue, to make the extensions stick to your hair. If you’re not careful in removing them, you might pull out some of your own hair, therefore damaging the strands. Again, like clip-ins, this problem is nonexistent in ZALA Halo hair extensions.

3 Mistakes You’re Doing When Styling With Hair Extensions

Hair extensions are such an easy fix to most of your hair concerns. Although you do need to exercise proper care and maintenance to ensure they last as long as possible, they’re still a lot more ‘ready to wear’ than natural hair in more ways than one.

zala 3 mistakes when styling with hair extensions

This doesn’t mean that you can’t make mistakes when using hair extensions, though! Mistakes do happen sometimes and sadly, there’s nothing worse than poorly done hair extensions!

Take a look at these 3 mistakes you’re doing when styling with hair extensions!

1. Using hair extensions of the wrong length

Yes, we all know that hair extensions are designed to make your hair look much longer than it actually is. That’s literally what the name implies. Hair extensions = to extend. Right!

But you see, there is such a thing as using hair extensions of the wrong length. We know, honey, you got a pixie cut this summer because of the blazing hot weather. But when you’re styling with hair extensions, you can’t just buy 20″ hair extensions now and expect everything to look perfect! It’s the same reason why a bob cut won’t look good with 15″ extensions. The bob will look totally out of place and you’ll just look strange at best and ridiculous at worst.

It may be hard to accept, but some things aren’t just meant to be.

2. Matching the roots instead of the shafts

Another mistake you’re doing when styling with hair extensions is matching the color with the roots instead of the shafts.

If you think about it, it actually makes sense to match the roots. After all, isn’t that the real color of your hair anyway? But contrary to popular belief, it’s actually much better to match the shafts instead of the roots. Remember, your goal is to extend your hair, which means to lengthen it and make it appear longer than it actually is. This means it would make more sense to match the part that you want to lengthen, right?

Plus, matching the roots instead of the shafts would look very weird if you’re sporting a whole different color from your natural hair. I’m talking about blondes who have decided to go brunette here. Believe me, you’re better off extending your new, darker color.

3. Choosing cheaper products over quality ones

Quality over quantity — this is one rule in life that rarely ever goes wrong.

And in the world of hair extensions, this applies to both the products themselves as well as the aftercare products needed to maintain them. Make sure not to buy cheap and obviously low-quality products just to save some bucks. I’m telling you, it’s more costly to be cheap, especially in the long run.

If you’re interested in keeping your hair extensions for a good while, you better make sure you’re choosing high-quality products!

It’s normal to make mistakes, heck, everyone makes them! But once you find out what you’re doing wrong, then that’s when you can finally start to make things right. Treat your hair extensions well and they’ll also serve you well in more years to come.

Top 3 Tips To Having The Best Holiday Hair

The holiday season is coming up soon and you wouldn’t want to be caught dead with a less-than-stunning crowning glory, would you? In fact, believe it or not, your hair can make or break your entire style. Read on as we show you how you can have the best holiday hair.

zala top 3 tips best holiday hair

Here are the top 3 tips to having the best holiday hair!

Top 3 Tips To Having The Best Holiday Hair

Tip #1: Clean

It’s very important to keep your hair clean at all times if you want the best holiday hair. Unless you have a naturally oily scalp, you normally don’t have to shampoo more than thrice a week. Too much shampoo can strip away the natural oils on your scalp, leading to dry and brittle hair. At the same time though, going too long with dirty hair can lead to sebum build-up, dandruff, and at the very worst, hair loss. Yikes!

So how exactly do you get your hair to stay clean? One simple thing you can do is to comb your hair first thing in the morning when you wake up and last before you sleep at night. Combing your hair removes minor debris that can dirty your hair, and it also keeps your hair tangle-free.

Another tip is to refrain from touching your hair too much. Your fingers have oil in them that can make your hair unnecessarily dirty. We’re willing to bet that the best holiday hair probably isn’t dirty.

Tip #2: Moisturize

Dry hair is pretty much synonymous to unhealthy hair. Of course, so is greasy hair, but while the latter can only cause people to avoid you due to the smell (which you probably don’t want either, by the way), dry hair can also cause your hair strands to snap at the shafts. This can lead to frizzy and tangled hair, hair that looks chopped off, and even hair loss, if we’re talking extremes.

Want to look straight out of a hair commercial? The solution is simple: start adding conditioners and leave-ons to your regular hair routine. Locking in the moisture in your hair strands is vital in making sure that your hair won’t be too dehydrated and brittle.

Remember, moisturizing your hair is super important if you want body and volume in your hair. Get those luscious locks for your best holiday hair now!

Tip #3: Protect

Last but not the least, you should also protect your hair from any possible damages that it could sustain. Think of it as your own skin. You wouldn’t go out into the blazing hot sun without sunscreen on your face, right?

How you treat your skin is how you should treat your hair. When applying heat to your hair, make sure to use products to reduce the heat damage. When you’re going out, apply a product like the Revive Me Treatment to protect your hair from the air outside and instantly control your frizz and dry ends. You can even use these on your hair extensions, to ensure their maximum lifespan!

You know what they say, “prevention is always better than cure.”
